Violin lessons for kids: size, age and renting

Las Vegas Music School · · 6 min read

Short answer

Children can usually start violin lessons from age 5. Violins come in fractional sizes, from very small 1/16 up to full size 4/4, matched to the length of the child's arm. Most families rent until their child reaches full size, because a growing child may need three or four sizes along the way.

When can a child start violin?

We teach violin from age 5. The first lessons focus on posture, holding the bow and making a clear sound on open strings. Children who can follow short instructions and focus for 15 to 20 minutes are usually ready.

How violin sizes work

Size is based on arm length, measured from the neck to the middle of the palm with the arm held straight out to the side. The chart below is a typical guide; your teacher will check the fit in person.

Arm lengthTypical violin size
About 14–15.5 in1/16
About 15.5–17 in1/10
About 17–18.5 in1/8
About 18.5–20 in1/4
About 20–22 in1/2
About 22–23 in3/4
23 in and over4/4 (full size)

A violin that's too big is the most common problem we see. It strains the left arm and makes playing in tune harder.

Rent or buy?

Renting makes sense while your child is growing. Many music stores offer rental programs where you can trade up a size and put part of the rental toward a purchase later. Buy once your child reaches full size and is committed to playing.

What to bring to violin lessons

  • A violin in the right size, with bow and case
  • Rosin
  • A shoulder rest
  • A music stand for practice at home
  • A soft cloth to wipe rosin off the strings
  • A pencil for marking music

Viola and cello

Viola is sized much like violin. Cello is sized by the child's height and seated leg length, and cellos also come in fractional sizes. We teach violin, viola, cello and double bass.

Help with school orchestra

Many students start violin through their school orchestra. Private lessons alongside school orchestra help a lot with posture, intonation and reading, and we're happy to work on orchestra music in lessons.

Questions parents ask

Is violin harder than piano to start?

Violin takes longer to sound good because the player makes the pitch and the tone. Most children need a few months before it sounds smooth. Weekly lessons make a big difference in that first stretch.

How long should a child practice violin?

Ten to fifteen minutes most days is right for young beginners, increasing as pieces get longer.

Do you teach adults violin too?

Yes. Adult beginners are welcome on violin, viola and cello.
