Drum lessons for kids: do you need a drum kit at home?
Las Vegas Music School · · 5 min read

Short answer
No. Most beginner drummers start with a practice pad and a pair of sticks, which cost little and make almost no noise. An electronic kit with headphones is the next step for families in apartments or close neighborhoods. An acoustic kit can wait until your child is committed.
What beginner drummers practice on
- Practice pad and sticks. Enough for the first months. Most early lessons focus on grip, control and the basic rudiments, and all of that happens on a pad.
- Electronic drum kit. Quiet with headphones, and useful for practicing grooves with bass drum and hi-hat. A good fit for apartments and HOA communities.
- Acoustic drum kit. The real feel and sound, but loud. Worth it once your child is playing regularly and you have the space.
Drummers don't need to bring a kit to lessons; there's one in the studio.
What kids learn in the first months
- Holding the sticks and a relaxed stroke
- Rudiments such as single strokes, double strokes and paradiddles
- Counting and reading basic rhythms
- Keeping steady time with a metronome
- First rock and pop grooves on the full kit
What age can kids start drums?
We teach drums from age 5. For the youngest students, early lessons lean toward pad work, rhythm games and reading, because reaching the pedals of a full kit comfortably comes a little later. Your instructor will adjust the kit and the plan to your child.
Protect their hearing
Acoustic drums are loud enough to damage hearing over time. Earplugs or isolation headphones are a good habit from the first day on a real kit.
How much to practice
Ten to twenty minutes most days. Short, focused pad work with a metronome builds control faster than long, loud sessions on a full kit.
Questions parents ask
Are drum lessons good for kids with lots of energy?
Often, yes. Drumming channels energy into focus, timing and coordination, and progress is easy to hear.
Do you teach percussion as well as drum kit?
Yes. We teach drum kit and hand percussion, including reading for school band.
Are drum lessons the same price as other instruments?
Yes. All instruments are $200 a month for a weekly 30-minute lesson, or $400 for 60 minutes.
